Therapy for the Burned-Out People Pleaser
in Chicago, Illinois & Virtual

At HumanKind Psych, we believe you deserve to actually enjoy your life- not just do what your brain (or society) says you're supposed to do!

Our Services

At HumanKind Psych, we don't believe in a cookie-cutter approach to mental health. We bring our humanness to our work. We're trained professionals who practice with intention, offering you a combination of education, tools, skills, insight, and in-the-room experiences to help you grow and heal. Therapy isn't always fun or easy. If you're just looking for validation, you might as well talk to ChatGPT. If you just want someone to tell you what to do, read a self-help book. What we offer is deep and authentic. Therapy at HumanKind could be for you if you've ever felt like:

You're "the strong one"

Your default is to be the helper, the empath, the one who gives support to others... but you struggle to ask for help or receive care yourself. You don't want to be seen as a burden. Besides, you can handle it on your own.

Everyone else seems to have it figured out.

It's like you were absent the day of school when everyone else learned how to be a functional adult. Somehow other people seem to effortlessly stay on top of the things you struggle with You're the only one who can't get your sh*t together.

You "suck at change"

You get anxious when your plans change, or when unexpected things happen. You tend to get stuck on wanting to control things. Maybe you wish you could "go with the flow" but you're just not a chill person.

You've been called "too sensitive"

You feel your feelings deeply, but worry that you are "too much" for the people around you. So you keep things under wraps and pretend everything's fine.

Something is "wrong with your brain"

Sitting still is hard, staying focused is hard, remembering where you put things is hard. You're not sure how to crack the code on staying organized and on track toward your goals.

You worry that with one wrong move, it'll all come crashing down.

It feels like you have to constantly work to stay on top of everything. You're bracing yourself for the other shoe to drop when things go well. It's hard to trust yourself.

Our Philosophy & Clinical Approach

At HumanKind, we believe good therapy is a blend of art and science.  We weave various psychological theories into our work and tailor therapy to your individual needs and presenting concerns. We believe that human beings are holistic and our mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual functioning are richly interconnected. This means mental health can be influenced by biological, psychological, social, systemic, spiritual, and cultural factors and we need to examine all of these variables to properly address your struggles.

It's important that you and your clinician are a good match in terms of personality and style. We work hard to build trusting, collaborative relationships with each of our clients. Therapy can be hard work and isn't always fun, but together we can navigate it in a meaningful way if we have mutual respect for one another and trust in the process.

If your clinician ever misses the mark or says or does something that doesn't land well with you (which is likely, since we're all human!), please let us know. We want to work through any misunderstandings and make sure you feel cared for and understood. A positive relationship between client and therapist can be healing in and of itself!

We use many theories to guide our practice, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Adlerian Psychology, Feminist Theory, Existential Psychology, and Family Systems theory. Our staff has a variety of specialized skills training and diverse interests, including Intuitive Eating counseling, Body Image Resilience, Chronic Pain Self-Management, Mindfulness Meditation, Internal Family Systems, and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

We regularly consult the research to ensure that we are providing care from the most up-to-date and well-informed perspective. We're committed to lifelong learning, and know that we will always have more growing to do, both as clinicians and human beings!

We are deeply committed to our work and passionate about helping you find greater fulfillment and joy in life with our clinical sessions.

Reduced Rate Options

At HumanKind Psychological Services, we believe that access to high-quality mental health care should not be limited by financial barriers. We offer a limited number of reduced-fee (“sliding scale”) sessions to support clients who are paying out of pocket and who may not be able to afford our full self-pay rates.

Sliding scale spots are designed to balance accessibility and sustainability: they make therapy more attainable for those who need financial flexibility, while ensuring that our practice can continue offering high-quality care. We use a values- and community-based approach to determining a sliding scale arrangement. Our reduced-fee tiers are as follows:

Resourced Rate

  • Intake: $130–$150

  • Ongoing Sessions: $100–$120
This rate is available to clients who can meet their basic needs but experience some financial strain or limited disposable income.
If you have access to financial help from family, partners, or friends, we ask that you explore those options before requesting a reduced-fee slot. This allows us to preserve reduced-rate availability for clients with fewer resources.

Community Rate

  • Intake: $90–$110

  • Ongoing Sessions: $60–$90

This rate is reserved for clients who may have difficulty meeting basic needs, experience significant debt, or have unstable income or housing. These slots are limited and prioritized for those who would otherwise be unable to access therapy.

The "Green Bottle" image above was created by Alexis J. Cunningfolk (www.wortsandcunning.com). It may help you determine which tier (Self-Pay Rate, Resourced Rate, or Community Rate) is appropriate for you. We trust our clients to honestly self-reflect on their situations and needs, and collaborate with us to determine a fair arrangement.

If you are interested in a sliding scale arrangement at HumanKind, please mention this to our intake coordinator during your initial call, or to your therapist. We will discuss your circumstances and our determination process to ensure everyone is on the same page.
