Life Transitions Counseling in Chicago
Change can be hard... even when it's a change you chose or something you thought you wanted! You might know you're entering a new chapter while still feeling anxious, uncertain, overwhelmed, or unsure of who you are within it. Sometimes the hardest transitions aren't clearly “good” or “bad”; they're experiences that ask you to let go of something familiar before you've figured out what comes next. It is completely natural to have some growing pains along the way. You aren't "bad at change." You're just adjusting to a new normal, and that might mean learning new ways to think about your life or yourself.
At HumanKind Psychological Services, we provide life transitions counseling for adults in Chicago navigating changes in relationships, work, family, identity, health, and other major areas of life. Therapy can give you space to make sense of what you're experiencing, understand what matters to you, and figure out how you want to move forward.
We offer in-person therapy at our Lakeview Chicago office and virtual therapy throughout Illinois.
What Kind of Life Transitions Can Therapy Help With?
There's no rule about which changes are “big enough” to bring to therapy. Some transitions happen unexpectedly, some transitions are outside of your control (and perhaps not changes you would have chosen for yourself), while others are things you've worked toward for years. Even positive changes can bring stress, grief, uncertainty, or questions about what comes next. These are some of the major life transitions we see most commonly, but of course, no change is too big or too small to deserve support.

How Therapy Can Help During a Life Transition
Life transitions often bring uncertainty, and uncertainty can make it tempting to search for the “right” decision or try to figure everything out before moving forward. Therapy can give you space to slow down, sort through competing thoughts and feelings, and better understand what you actually want, rather than trying to push yourself into whatever you think you should want.
Everyone is affected differently by change, but it brings up SOMETHING for most people (a strong reaction, worries, big feelings). At HumanKind, we can help you explore how your values, relationships, identity, expectations, and past experiences are shaping the way you're navigating change. You might work on tolerating uncertainty, making difficult decisions, setting boundaries, grieving what you're leaving behind, or adjusting expectations about what this stage of life was supposed to look like.
We are not into a cookie-cutter approach to therapy. We tailor therapy to the person in front of us. Depending on your needs, your therapist may draw from approaches including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, narrative therapy, values clarification, and other evidence-based and insight-oriented approaches.
You don't need to have everything figured out before coming to therapy. Sometimes the work is figuring out what the next chapter will look like while you're already living through it.
