Navigating Mental Health Content on Social Media: My Journey as a Clinical Psychologist

Hey there, internet friends!

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about all of the mental health and psychology content that’s out there on social media. Have you ever read a post on social media, or watched a video about mental health topics like anxiety, eating disorders, or ADHD and come away feeling confused? It can be tough to sort out what’s accurate and scientifically-based, and what’s just someone speaking with a lot of confidence, who actually has no clue what they’re talking about.

It seems like there are two options these days: You can follow people who have the training, education and credentials to speak with authority on these subjects… but they often use fancy clinical jargon that you need an advanced degree to understand! Or, you can follow influencer-types who don’t have the training or qualifications to teach about these topics, but they’re really good at working the algorithm and grabbing your attention with catchy one-liners and dance videos. It can be tricky to navigate the sea of information out there and know what to trust.

Fear not, because I’m here to help! This is exactly why I decided to join the online conversation about psychology and mental health. As someone who has struggled my entire life with perfectionism, people-pleasing, and various anxiety disorders and disordered eating (in strong recovery now!) I know firsthand what it’s like to go through these things, but I also have the education and professional experience to know how to treat them. I’m here to bring you the resources I wish I could have gotten when I was younger (before social media existed)!

My name is Dr. Paula Freedman, and I'm a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. I specialize in helping high-achieving perfectionists who struggle with anxiety, OCD, eating disorders, and more.

I'm passionate about making mental health information accessible to everyone, no matter where you are in the world. Over the last few years, I've been sharing psychology content on Instagram and TikTok on my handle @mindfuldrpaula, and I've met so many amazing people and discovered an incredible and supportive online community through running these accounts. Being on social media has given me the opportunity to spread awareness about mental health in a way that I wouldn't have been able to do otherwise.

I totally get how tricky it can be to find someone that has the credentials to back up all the videos they do on social media and that speak to you in a way that makes you go “Oh this is totally me! “.

That's where I come in – I'm qualified to talk about these topics, but I don't use fancy jargon or language that only experts can understand. My goal is to help you understand and apply the tools and techniques that can make a real difference in your life. I’m not interested in speaking in a fancy or clunky way. I think that these concepts should be delivered in a way that everybody can easily understand, so that anyone can have the chance to reap their rewards in everyday life.

Now, I have to admit that being on social media has its challenges. It can be tough to deal with trolls and negative comments, and it's easy to get caught up in the never-ending cycle of creating content for the algorithm. But despite those challenges, I'm committed to spreading the message about the power of psychology, mindfulness, and intuitive eating. These tools have changed my life, and I know they can change yours too.

It’s also where you’ll have opportunities to have me answer all of your burning mental health questions. Follow me on Instagram (@mindfuldrpaula) for updates on the launch and how to sign up.
